Croatian Naïve Art
The Hlebine School of Art emerged in the 1930s under the visionary leadership of Ivan Generalić, often hailed as the father of Croatia’s Naïve movement. Working in the distinctive oil-on-glass technique, Generalić and his peers transformed scenes of rural life into luminous, emotionally resonant compositions. Their works capture the authenticity of village traditions—peasants at work, in celebration, and in quiet reflection—rendered with remarkable realism and sincerity, free from idealization.
